They called him the Cool Ruler for good reason, and this single-LP anthology gathers highlights from Gregory Isaacs' golden years, running from 1972 through 1990.
Isaacs was one of reggae's most distinctive voices, a singer who could make a love song sound like a secret and a protest song sound like a prayer. Across nearly two decades he recorded for many of Jamaica's top producers and became the reigning king of lovers rock, all while keeping one foot planted in roots and cultural themes.
The fourteen tracks move from early sweetness like "All I Have Is Love" through the conviction of "Set the Captives Free" to the polished glide of "Permanent Lover" and the Music Works favourite "Too Good to Be True". His phrasing is the constant, unhurried and slightly wounded, sliding behind the beat as if he had all the time in the world.
The rhythms shift with the eras, from rootsy one-drop to the cleaner, digital sound of the late 1980s, but that velvet voice keeps everything stitched together. Even the toughest grooves feel tender in his hands.
It works as a doorway into a vast and sometimes bewildering catalogue, condensed into one well-paced record that keeps the Cool Ruler's charm front and centre from the first track to the last.
