Dancehall Days gathers a dozen songs from Gregory Isaacs at his 1970s peak, when the Cool Ruler was turning out hit after hit for Jamaica's sharpest producers.
Born in Jamaica in 1951, Isaacs co-founded the African Museum label and shop with fellow singer Errol Dunkley, and his early hit My Only Lover is widely credited as the first lovers rock record. This collection focuses on his most prolific years, when he worked with producers including Alvin Ranglin, Winston Holness, Gussie Clarke, Lloyd Campbell and Lee Scratch Perry.
All I Have Is Love shows off that silky, understated croon, a voice that could make heartbreak sound like a lullaby. Black a Kill Black and Slave Master reveal the conscious side of his writing, tough-minded roots songs carried on deep, rolling rhythms, and Sinner Man adds a moody spiritual edge. Lonely Lover completes the picture of a singer equally at home with romance and righteousness.
His mid and late seventies output helped lay the foundations for what became dancehall, which makes the title more than a nod.
Isaacs later reached the wider world with Night Nurse, but these are the records that built the legend. Put this on and let the Cool Ruler take over.
