Greg Freeman's All Set The Bone is a restless, bruising double LP that drags the Vermont songwriter's rough-hewn rock into stranger and louder territory.
Freeman helped shape the indie scene in Burlington, and after I Looked Out in 2022 and his breakout Burnover in 2025, he finally committed to music full time, leaving behind jobs that ranged from cemetery landscaper to line cook. For this third album he headed to the Southwest to record with producer John Congleton, the band working fast with a sign on the studio door warning against overthinking.
Opener "Cahokia" takes its name from the ancient Indigenous city across the Mississippi from St. Louis and lands with real venom. "Indu", the lead single, swings from scrappy discord into a lo-fi pop earworm, while "Decade" brings in horns and ragtime piano to wrestle with the fear of waiting for something that never arrives. "Marooned" builds into a sprawling epic before folding back on itself.
Throughout, Freeman fills his songs with unsettled characters, from a voter buried in credit card debt to a couple whose hearts clank like trapped lobsters.
It is a record about change and tension, and it plays like the sound of a songwriter hitting a new peak.
