G-Sides gathers the odds, ends and remixes from Gorillaz's first era, pressed here on 180-gram vinyl for anyone who wants the full picture of the cartoon band's debut years.

First issued in Japan in 2001 before a wider release the following year, the compilation rounded up B-sides from the sessions for the self-titled debut and the Tomorrow Comes Today EP. Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett's virtual four-piece were still a curious experiment at the time, and these tracks show the project at its most playful and least guarded.

The "19-2000 (Soulchild Remix)" swaps the original's rubbery bounce for a sunnier, radio-friendly shuffle and became the version many fans know best. "Ghost Train" carries the ramshackle charm of the very first Gorillaz material, and the Phi Life Cypher take on "Clint Eastwood" hands the verses to a fresh rap crew, revealing how sturdy that melodica hook really is.

Dub, trip-hop and lo-fi hip-hop drift in and out across both sides with no concern for genre boundaries, and the whole thing feels like a peek inside the studio scrapbook.

It is a fascinating glimpse of a band still discovering what it could be, and it sits naturally beside the debut album on any shelf of early-2000s favourites.
