Goo Goo Dolls' Dizzy Up the Girl comes back around as an anniversary edition on blue vinyl, the album that made a scrappy Buffalo band impossible to escape on the radio.
Released in 1998, it was their sixth studio album and the first to feature drummer Mike Malinin. Johnny Rzeznik and Robby Takac had spent their early years tearing through loud, punk-leaning records, and by this point the songs had grown bigger and more direct while keeping the bruised heart that made them worth hearing in the first place.
"Iris" is the obvious centrepiece, the aching ballad first heard on the City of Angels soundtrack before it took over radio for what felt like an entire year. "Slide" bounces along on a bright acoustic riff that hides a more complicated story underneath, "Black Balloon" is a tender reach toward someone slipping out of view, and "Broadway" carries a bittersweet hometown ache.
The production is glossy without going soft. Rzeznik's raspy tenor sits right up front, the guitars shimmer one minute and crunch the next, and the faster cuts keep the record from settling into polite territory.
Plenty of late-nineties albums have hardened into nostalgia pieces. This one still plays like a set of songs people genuinely need, and the blue pressing gives a well-worn favourite a fresh coat of colour.
