The Link Alive captures Gojira as a young band on the edge of greatness, a 2003 concert pressed here on amber colored vinyl in a gatefold jacket.
Long before global success, the French four-piece were building a reputation as one of the heaviest and most inventive bands in Europe. Recorded in Bordeaux, this set drew on their first two albums, Terra Incognita and The Link, and showed off the crushing riffs, complex rhythms and environmental themes that would define their later work.
"Love" lands like a slab of concrete, all slow, grinding heaviness, while "Embrace the World" builds into a whirlwind of riffing and Joe Duplantier's ferocious roar. "The Link" is a relentless, rhythmic onslaught, and "Clone" closes the set with a pounding, hypnotic intensity. Mario Duplantier also gets a drum solo, a show of power and precision in its own right.
The sound is raw but clear, putting you right in the middle of the pit without losing the detail of each instrument, and the band's tightness is remarkable for a group still so early in its career.
For Gojira fans, it is a fascinating document of the band before the world caught on. The amber vinyl and gatefold sleeve make it a striking addition to any metal shelf.
