Gojira's From Mars to Sirius lands on colored double vinyl, a fitting format for the French band's sprawling concept album about a dead planet brought back to life.
Released in 2005, the third album from brothers Joe and Mario Duplantier and their bandmates was recorded largely in a studio they built themselves in their home region of southwest France. They produced it on their own, and that independence shows in every crushing, idiosyncratic riff. The story follows an interplanetary quest to revive a dying world, with environmental themes running straight through it long before that was common in metal.
"Flying Whales" is the signature track, opening on eerie, whale-song textures before collapsing into one of the heaviest grooves of the decade. "Backbone" hits like a landslide, "The Heaviest Matter of the Universe" lives up to its title, and the long closer "Global Warming" brings the story full circle.
Mario's drumming is astonishingly precise, while Joe's roar carries real conviction rather than mere menace. Between the onslaughts, quieter interludes and melodic passages give the album room to breathe.
Widely regarded as the record that put Gojira on the international map, it remains a landmark of progressive extreme metal, and it sounds massive spread across four sides.
