Eighteen years after The Odd Couple, Gnarls Barkley return with Atlanta, the duo's third and, by their own account, final album, pressed here on green vinyl.
CeeLo Green first hinted at a new record back in 2013, but it took until 2026 for him and Danger Mouse to finish the job. The album shares its name with CeeLo's hometown, the city that raised Goodie Mob and so much Southern hip-hop and soul, and Danger Mouse produced every track. Dan Auerbach, Sam Cohen and Grandaddy's Jason Lytle are among the musicians who drop in along the way.
Lead single "Pictures" announced the comeback, with CeeLo's elastic voice front and centre over Danger Mouse's moody, cinematic production. "Tomorrow Died Today" opens the record on a typically fatalistic note, "Cyberbully (Yayo)" brings a wry modern edge, and "Sweet Evil," the longest track here, gives the arrangements room to stretch. The old chemistry is intact: one brilliant, eccentric singer and a producer who knows exactly how to frame him.
Thirteen songs in under 45 minutes, tightly sequenced and full of surprises, with barely a wasted moment.
For anyone who has loved this odd couple since St. Elsewhere, it is a bittersweet farewell, and a thrilling one.
