Marie Ulven turned bedroom-pop devotion into full-volume catharsis on if i could make it go quiet, the 2021 debut from girl in red, here on black vinyl in a gatefold jacket.
The Norwegian songwriter had spent years building a fiercely loyal following with home-recorded singles, so much so that asking if someone listened to girl in red became a quiet code among queer fans. Her first full-length widened the frame, trading lo-fi intimacy for bigger guitars, sharper production and lyrics that held nothing back: betrayal, lust, longing and the slow climb out of depression all get their moment.
"Serotonin", made with Finneas, is the explosive opener, a racing pop anthem about intrusive thoughts and the chemistry of a brain that will not switch off. "Did You Come?" spits betrayal over crunchy, driving guitars, while "Rue" and "I'll Call You Mine" pull back into softer, aching territory where her voice sounds almost unbearably close. The record closes by showing off her instrumental chops, a fitting exhale after so much said out loud.
It is a messy, honest and often thrilling record from an artist refusing to sand down the rough edges. For fans who found themselves in these songs, the gatefold edition gives them the room they deserve.
