The Revolution Will Not Be Televised gathers Gil Scott-Heron's most essential early work into one record, pulling from his first three Flying Dutchman albums to make the strongest possible case for why he mattered from the very start.
Scott-Heron began as a poet and novelist before he ever became a recording artist, and that literary instinct is all over this compilation, spoken word delivered with the rhythmic precision of someone who understood music as an extension of language rather than a backdrop for it. Small Talk at 154th and Lennox, Pieces of a Man, and Free Will each contributed to this 1974 anthology, and hearing them pulled together makes the throughline impossible to miss, a young Black American voice diagnosing the country's failures years before most of the culture caught up to what he was actually saying.
The title track remains the most quoted piece of spoken word in American music, a rapid-fire dismissal of media complacency that still lands with full force decades later. Whitey on the Moon delivers its critique of misplaced national priorities with devastating economy in under two minutes. Home Is Where the Hatred Is carries real, aching vulnerability beneath its unflinching subject matter, and Lady Day and John Coltrane closes the set as a genuine celebration, joy standing right alongside all the anger elsewhere on the record.
Restored to its original gatefold format on 180 gram vinyl. This is still the essential entry point into everything Scott-Heron became.
