You Give Love a Bad Name is a 1987 dispatch from the most notorious corner of American underground punk, and it is every bit as confrontational as GG Allin's reputation suggests. This reissue brings the album back to vinyl.
Allin built his name on transgression, with chaotic shows and lyrics designed to offend almost everyone. He cut this album in a single day with his backing band The Holy Men for Homestead Records, and the label's own Gerard Cosloy played guitar on the session, alongside drummer Mike Edison and bassist Mike Kirkland.
Musically it is ragged, sloppy hardcore and garage punk, all buzzsaw guitars, clattering drums and shouted vocals. Beer Picnic lurches along with a drunken grin, and Garbage Dump is a cover of a song written by Charles Manson, which tells you plenty about the album's appetite for provocation. Most of the song titles here cannot be printed politely, and the lyrics are explicit, violent and deliberately offensive throughout.
This is a historical document of an infamous figure rather than a crowd-pleaser, and it makes no attempt to soften anything.
Strictly for listeners who know exactly what they are getting into, it remains a key artefact for collectors tracing the most extreme fringes of eighties punk and the scene that grew up around Allin's legend.
