Gerard Way stepped out from the shadow of My Chemical Romance with Hesitant Alien, his 2014 solo debut and a fuzzed-up love letter to Britpop and glam.
After My Chemical Romance split in 2013, Way surprised fans by trading theatrical emo for the sounds he had loved growing up, from 70s glam rock and fractured post-punk to 90s Britpop and shoegaze. Producer Doug McKean helped him build something woozy, loud and playful, recorded between studios in California and Texas, with Tchad Blake handling the mix.
Lead single "No Shows" bounces with cheeky swagger, while "Millions" is a big, warm-hearted anthem that became an early fan favorite. "Action Cat" crackles with scrappy energy, and opener "The Bureau" sets the tone with distorted, saturated guitars that announce a very different kind of record.
Way's lyrics stay strange and affectionate, full of outsiders and oddballs, and the fuzz never buries the melodies. His voice sounds relaxed in a way the old band's grand concepts rarely allowed, and the quieter moments show a softer, more reflective side.
For fans who followed him from Black Parade spectacle to this scrappier world, it's a fascinating left turn. It also holds up as one of the most charming solo debuts to come out of that era of alternative rock, and it comes with a digital download card.
