George Strait's first Christmas album trades sleigh-bell schmaltz for honky-tonk warmth, and Merry Christmas Strait to You sounds every bit as easygoing as it did in 1986.

Strait was deep into his run as country's steadiest hitmaker when he cut these ten songs at Sound Stage Studios in Nashville, co-producing with Jimmy Bowen. Rather than dress the season up, the pair kept the arrangements rooted in the honky-tonk sound of his own records, with that unbothered baritone front and center. The album went on to double platinum, settling in as a holiday staple for country households.

The set mixes chestnuts with fresh material written for the occasion. "White Christmas" opens the album with a relaxed, unhurried croon, and "There's a New Kid in Town", co-written by Keith Whitley, tells its Christmas story in plain, heartfelt country language. "For Christ's Sake, It's Christmas" comes from Hank Cochran and longtime Strait collaborator Dean Dillon, a reminder of the songwriting pedigree he always surrounded himself with, while "When It's Christmas Time in Texas" brings the whole thing home to the Lone Star State with a grin.
