Before the grand production of All Things Must Pass, there were these sketches, and Early Takes: Volume 1 presents them on 180-gram vinyl in all their intimate glory.

Released in 2012 as a companion to Martin Scorsese's documentary Living in the Material World, the collection was compiled by Giles Martin, with Olivia Harrison as executive producer. Most of these recordings come from 1970, when George Harrison was finally unloading a backlog of songs that had piled up during his years in The Beatles, and they catch him unadorned and unguarded.

My Sweet Lord appears as a gentle demo, stripped of its famous wall of sound, while All Things Must Pass carries a quiet, almost hymnal grace. There is also a lovely reading of Bob Dylan's Mama You've Been on My Mind and a heartfelt take on Let It Be Me, the ballad long associated with the Everly Brothers, revealing the music Harrison loved as much as the music he made.

Hearing these songs this bare is a revelation. The melodies are already fully formed, the voice is warm and unhurried, and the spiritual searching that defined his solo work is right there in plain sight.

For Harrison fans, it is a rare chance to sit in the room while future classics were still taking shape.
