George Clinton went solo and still brought the whole mothership along: Computer Games lands here as a 180-gram UK import pressing.
Released in 1982, it arrived after Clinton had formally wound down Parliament and Funkadelic, yet the credits read like a P-Funk family reunion. Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Eddie Hazel, Junie Morrison, Garry Shider, Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley all turn up, and Pedro Bell's cartoon cover art keeps the visual lineage intact. The album gave Clinton a welcome commercial lift during a rough stretch, climbing to number three on the R&B albums chart.
Side two holds the crown jewel. "Atomic Dog" became a number one R&B single, all elastic synth bass, barking hooks and unhurried strut, and hip-hop producers have returned to its groove again and again. "Loopzilla," paired with "Man's Best Friend" in a sprawling twelve-minute medley, keeps the party rolling, while "Get Dressed" opens the record with a wink. The title track nods to the drum machines and synthesizers reshaping funk at the time, bent firmly to Clinton's own warped logic.
It is the sound of P-Funk adapting to the electro era without losing its sense of humour. Heavyweight vinyl suits all that low end, so give the dog some room to bark.
