Gary Numan's Telekon closed his machine era in style, and this 45th anniversary expanded edition spreads the 1980 album across two coloured LPs with previously unreleased bonus material.
Following Replicas and The Pleasure Principle, Telekon gave Numan his third consecutive UK number one album and his last. It was also his most ambitious record to date: self-produced, and noticeably richer than its predecessors, with guitars, strings and lush synthesiser textures layered around his clipped, alienated vocals. Numan later said the album carried a hint of goodbye, and he stepped away from touring not long after its release.
"This Wreckage" opens with brooding grandeur, a slow, piano-led build that signals a more expansive sound, while "Remind Me to Smile" adds a jerky, almost funky edge. "I Dream of Wires" remains one of his most haunting compositions, cold and romantic at once. The second disc completes the album and then digs into the archive, adding "Like a B-Film", a never-finished song from the original sessions, alongside early versions of three album tracks.
The record's influence on industrial and electronic rock is hard to overstate, and it still sounds ahead of its time. For Numan collectors, this edition pairs the original statement with a revealing look behind the curtain.
