Gary Numan's Dead Son Rising began life as a pile of leftover demos and grew into one of his darkest, most cinematic records, presented here as a limited deluxe edition on colored 2LP vinyl.

Released in 2011, the album was co-written and co-produced with Ade Fenton, the collaborator who had already helped sharpen Numan's industrial edge on Jagged. Together they reworked those older sketches until the original ideas were barely visible, steering them toward something stranger and more experimental than a simple clear-out of the vaults. The result sits comfortably alongside the heavier, more menacing records of Numan's later career.

The sound is all grinding synths, cavernous percussion and that unmistakable, glacial voice. "Dead Sun Rising" draws on a science fiction story Numan had been writing for years, all looming dread and widescreen scale. Lead single "The Fall" lurches forward on industrial weight and a melody that refuses to let go, while "Big Noise Transmission" crackles with the paranoid tension he has always done better than anyone. A pair of brooding instrumentals hint at the film-score ambitions he shared with Fenton.

For fans who think of Numan only through the synth-pop of the early years, this is a bracing reminder of how far he pushed the sound. The deluxe pressing gives it the scale it was built for.
