Futurebirds bring their Athens, Georgia warmth to Easy Company, a 2024 album that sounds like a band completely at home with one another.
Formed by University of Georgia students in 2008, the group has long blended rock, Americana and country rock with a streak of psychedelia, creating something loose and communal. Easy Company was their first full-length for Dualtone, produced by Brad Cook, whose work across indie and Americana made him a natural fit for their sprawling, harmony-rich sound.
Waxahatchee's Katie Crutchfield joins on the title track, her voice weaving through the band's easygoing groove, while Drive-By Truckers' Patterson Hood turns up on "Soft Drugs," adding his weathered Southern storytelling to the mix.
Elsewhere, "Solitaires" and "Bloom" show off the band's knack for unhurried melodies, jangling guitars and stacked vocals that glow like late summer light. Nothing feels rushed, and the songs take the scenic route and are better for it, drifting from sunny singalongs to moments of quiet reflection.
For fans of laid-back Southern rock with heart, Easy Company is a front-porch record in the best sense, made for long evenings, cold drinks and good company. It's also a fine introduction for anyone wondering why this band has such a loyal following back home and on the road.
