Funkadelic's second album is a dare printed on a sleeve, and Free Your Mind... And Your Ass Will Follow still makes good on it, now spinning on blue vinyl.
Released in 1970, only months after the group's debut, the record pushed George Clinton's collective deeper into psychedelia than any soul act had dared to go. Cut for Detroit's Westbound label, it fused heavy acid rock guitar, gospel fervor and street-level funk into something messy, mind-bending and impossible to file neatly, laying the groundwork for everything the Parliament-Funkadelic universe would become.
The title track "Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow" sprawls across ten minutes of echoing chants, phased guitar and sermon-like exhortations, a trip in every sense. "Funky Dollar Bill" turns sharp social commentary into a strutting groove, while "I Wanna Know If It's Good to You" lets the guitar wail over a slow, soulful crawl. "Eulogy and Light" closes things on a gloriously strange note, a reversed-tape oddity that still raises eyebrows.
Eddie Hazel's guitar, Bernie Worrell's keyboards and the band's loose, joyous interplay keep even the wildest moments anchored to the groove.
It remains a cornerstone for crate diggers, sample hunters and anyone curious about where funk went when it took the long way round, and that blue wax only adds to the haze.
