Fugazi's Red Medicine is the sound of a band refusing to repeat itself, roomier and more adventurous than anything they had made before.

Released in 1995, the Washington, D.C. group's fourth studio album was produced by the band themselves rather than with Ted Niceley, who had worked on In on the Kill Taker. The songs took shape through months of jam sessions in a house in Connecticut before Ian MacKaye, Guy Picciotto, Joe Lally and Brendan Canty tracked them at Inner Ear Studios with longtime engineer Don Zientara.

Do You Like Me opens on a muffled, boombox-style recording before snapping into focus, a deliberate jolt that sets the tone. Bed for the Scraping is one of their most urgent, fist-in-the-air songs, Birthday Pony coils and lurches with real menace, and Long Distance Runner closes the record on a patient, hypnotic groove.

Elsewhere, short instrumental pieces, alternate tunings, a dub-inflected track featuring clarinet and bursts of noise open up space and texture without ever dulling the band's sharp edges.

It is the record where Fugazi proved that post-hardcore could be experimental and still hit hard, and it remains a firm favorite for listeners who like their punk with plenty of room to breathe.
