Margin Walker caught Fugazi in 1989, only a couple of years into their existence and already sounding like the most urgent band in Washington, DC.

Recorded in London at Southern Studios with John Loder after the band's first European tour, these six songs were originally meant to be their debut album. Worn out from the road, the band decided the takes weren't quite up to scratch and released them as an EP instead. It was later paired with their self-titled first EP on the 13 Songs collection, still one of the great introductions to the band.

The title track, sung by Guy Picciotto, opens with a lurching, push-pull rhythm and a wild-eyed vocal. Ian MacKaye leads And the Same, a coiled and tense highlight, Provisional bursts with nervous energy, and Promises, the closer, takes its time and builds into something brooding and heavy.

Even at around seventeen minutes, it's packed with the tension and release that made Fugazi so distinctive, from Joe Lally's rolling bass and Brendan Canty's taut drumming to two guitarists sparring at every turn.

Short, sharp and fiercely principled, Margin Walker remains essential listening for anyone digging into the foundations of post-hardcore, and a reminder of how much a band can say in six songs.
