Fugazi's End Hits landed in 1998 sounding like a band taking apart its own house to see what else it could build.

By their fifth album the Washington, DC quartet had nothing left to prove, so they spent months at Inner Ear Studios with Don Zientara, poking at the edges of their sound. The title had fans fearing a farewell. It wasn't one, only an in-joke about stray drum hits tucked after the final track, but the restless mood of the record made the rumour easy to believe.

For the first time, Ian MacKaye, Guy Picciotto, Joe Lally and Brendan Canty brought electronic drums, synthesisers and layered percussion into the room. Break kicks things off with a short, sharp shove, and Place Position snaps with the wiry tension that made them famous. Five Corporations bristles with nervy, angular guitar, while Floating Boy stretches out into something eerie and spacious, its drums stripped back until the song seems to hover.

It's a record of contrasts, punk muscle one moment and patient, dub-flecked space the next, always driven by interlocking guitars and one of the great rhythm sections in underground rock.

Critics took a while to catch up, but End Hits has grown into a favourite for fans who like their post-hardcore with a little mystery left in it.
