Frehley's Comet's Live+1 returns in expanded form on silver vinyl in a gatefold jacket, a snapshot of Ace Frehley's post-KISS band in full flight.
Released in 1988 as a stopgap between the band's debut and Second Sighting, the original EP paired four songs recorded live at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom in 1987 with one new studio track. Frehley shared the stage with guitarist and singer Tod Howarth, bassist John Regan and drummer Anton Fig, a longtime collaborator who had played on Ace's 1978 solo album.
"Rip It Out", a fan favourite from that solo record, crackles with extra grit in front of a crowd. "Rocket Ride" brings a KISS staple into the Comet's set, all swagger and squealing leads, while Howarth takes the microphone on the stomping "Breakout". The studio closer, "Words Are Not Enough", leans toward polished late-eighties radio rock with a hook built for the charts.
This edition adds bonus tracks to the original running order, giving fans more of the band from the same era and a fuller picture of their live firepower.
For anyone who spent the eighties air-guitaring along to the Spaceman, it is a loud, affectionate reminder of how much fun Frehley was having once he struck out on his own.
