The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard captures the young trumpet star stepping into the spotlight on his first album for Impulse!, a 1963 classic now pressed on 180 gram vinyl.
Hubbard was already one of the most exciting trumpeters in New York, and this session gave him a front line built for fireworks, with Curtis Fuller on trombone and John Gilmore, best known for his long tenure with Sun Ra, on tenor saxophone. Pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Art Davis and drummer Louis Hayes complete a rhythm section that swings with effortless authority, giving the three horns a sturdy platform to build on.
The record opens with Duke Ellington's "Caravan," reimagined for this rich three-horn lineup, before Hubbard's own "Bob's Place" stretches past the ten-minute mark. His take on Gershwin's "Summertime" runs just as long, giving the soloists plenty of room to explore, while the closing original "The 7th Day" shows off his writing at its most ambitious. With only five tracks across two sides, every performance gets space to breathe and build.
It sits neatly between Hubbard's Blue Note dates and his later CTI years, a snapshot of a virtuoso finding his voice as a leader. Heavy vinyl gives those three horns plenty of body and bite.
