I Blow Out Big Candles Vinyl
I Blow Out Big Candles is Freak Slug's debut album, Manchester attitude filtered through a lo-fi VHS haze that makes even the confident tracks feel like they're being caught on a home camcorder.
Xenya Genovese built this project as a multi-disciplinary artist first, and it shows in how visual the whole record feels, songs that carry a specific grainy, slightly warped aesthetic even before you've seen any accompanying video. Released through Future Classic in 2025, the album trades polish for personality on purpose, confidence delivered with a wink rather than a straight face, titles alone doing a lot of the tonal work before a single note plays.
Sexy Lemon opens the record with exactly the playful, off-kilter energy the whole project runs on. Witch leans into something darker and stranger, proof the lo-fi surface can hold real menace when it wants to. Ugly Smile closes the original tracklist on the record's most emotionally direct note, self-deprecation turned into something oddly triumphant. Killer, one of the bonus tracks added for the expanded edition, sharpens that same attitude into the album's most cutting moment.
A debut that sounds like it was recorded on a scratched tape and somehow still lands every joke and every gut punch. Genovese clearly knows exactly what she's doing.
