For its 50th anniversary, Zoot Allures arrives as the album Frank Zappa almost released: Night Of The Iron Sausage, the 11-track double LP he built before trimming it, on 180-gram vinyl.

The original 1976 record was a lean, heavy affair, recorded mainly at the Record Plant in Los Angeles with Zappa handling guitars, bass, keyboards, synthesizers and vocals, and Terry Bozzio as his key collaborator behind the kit. Its slow-burning grooves and searing guitar work set it apart from the busier records that came before.

This edition restores the bigger vision. Reconstructed by vault keeper Joe Travers from hand-cut acetate reference discs, early mixes and a surviving tape of side four, it brings back pieces that were cut from the final album, including "Sleep Dirt" and "Filthy Habits", alongside alternate edits and mixes of familiar tracks.

The sequence opens with an early mix of "Disco Boy", Zappa's sly jab at nightlife culture, while an alternate edit of "Black Napkins" shows off one of his most lyrical, aching guitar showcases. "Filthy Habits" is pure menace, a grinding, doom-laden workout that rewards loud playback.

For Zappa collectors, this is a genuinely new way to hear a familiar chapter, and a fascinating look at how one of his records might have turned out.
