Before the arena shows and the folk-punk singalongs, there was Sleep Is for the Week, Frank Turner's 2007 solo debut, pressed here on brown vinyl.
Turner had just come out of the post-hardcore band Million Dead and swapped the screaming for an acoustic guitar. Produced by Ben Lloyd with Turner himself and first released on Xtra Mile, the album laid out the template for everything since: plainspoken lyrics about friendship, politics and getting older, sung with a punk's urgency over folk-rooted arrangements that leave the words front and centre.
The Real Damage opens the album and shows off his storytelling gift straight away. Romantic Fatigue is wry and self-aware, while Once We Were Anarchists weighs youthful ideals against the compromises of adult life. The Ballad of Me and My Friends, recorded live at the Camden Barfly, became an early rallying cry for the community that grew up around his shows, and it still sounds like a room full of people singing along.
Jamie Lenman of Reuben guests on The Ladies of London Town, a nice nod to Turner's heavier past.
For fans who know him from the later anthems, this is the raw, heartfelt starting point, and its blend of honesty and humour still hits hard.
