Twenty years after Frank Turner traded post-hardcore noise for an acoustic guitar, Campfire Punkrock 20 revisits the debut EP where his solo story began, now expanded with extra songs and live recordings.
Fresh from the end of Million Dead, Turner made the original EP in 2006, with guitarist Ben Lloyd recording the sessions at bassist Tarrant Anderson's home in Oxford and Tristan Ivemy handling the mix. It was scrappy, heartfelt and unmistakably English, folk songs played with punk urgency and a pub singalong's sense of community. This anniversary edition adds the two songs that joined the American release a year later, plus a run of live recordings from his 50th solo show in London, captured that same year.
"Nashville Tennessee" still lands like a statement of intent, wry and road-weary, while "Casanova Lament" shows off the self-deprecating wit that would become a trademark. "The Real Damage", a bleary morning-after reckoning, sits comfortably alongside the much-loved "The Ballad of Me and My Friends". The live tracks are rough-edged and intimate, the sound of a songwriter testing material in small rooms before it carried him to far bigger ones.
Longtime fans get a warm trip back to the beginning, and newer converts get the clearest view yet of where those anthems came from. It's a small record with a big heart.
