Fourplay's Elixir celebrates its 30th anniversary on 180 gram double vinyl, giving the smooth jazz supergroup's third album space to breathe across four sides.
Pianist Bob James, guitarist Lee Ritenour, bassist Nathan East and drummer Harvey Mason first came together at the start of the nineties, four session veterans who sounded like they had been playing together for decades. By 1995 they had become one of contemporary jazz's most dependable names, and Elixir polished their blend of jazz, R&B and pop to a deep, glowing shine that still sounds expensive.
"Why Can't It Wait Till Morning" brings in Phil Collins to sing his own ballad, and "The Closer I Get to You" pairs Patti Austin and Peabo Bryson on the song made famous by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway. The title track "Elixir" and "Magic Carpet Ride" let the quartet stretch out, with East's bass and Ritenour's guitar trading phrases over Mason's feather-light groove.
James keeps the keyboards elegant and understated, the glue that holds every arrangement together, while the guests slot in without ever overpowering the band.
It is late-night music of the most refined kind, warm and unhurried, and this anniversary pressing lets every brushed cymbal and rounded bass note land with real presence.
