Four Tet's Rounds was built from a desktop computer, a home hi-fi and a folder of samples, yet it sounds lovingly handmade. This 180-gram reissue spans two LPs plus a bonus CD.
Released in 2003 as his third album as Four Tet, it pushed his blend of folk textures and electronic rhythm somewhere more personal. Hebden spent ten months making it in his North London flat, building each track from samples processed until their origins disappeared, with only the guitar on "Slow Jam" recorded fresh. It landed on plenty of best-of-the-decade lists.
Almost nothing on the record was played live, yet it breathes like a band in a room. "She Moves She" glides on a loose, head-nodding groove, the nine-minute "Unspoken" lets a patient piano figure unspool into the album's emotional centre, and "As Serious As Your Life" takes its name from a book about free jazz and answers it with restless, tumbling drums.
The bonus disc is a 2004 live set recorded in Copenhagen, with Hebden reshaping Rounds material alongside older favourites from Pause, a vivid snapshot of these songs in motion.
For anyone who likes electronic music warm and slightly scuffed at the edges, this belongs right next to the hi-fi it was made on.
