Four Tet's Pink gathers Kieran Hebden's club-focused 12-inch singles of 2011 and 2012, plus two brand new tracks, into one glowing double LP.
After years of making intricate, folk-flecked electronica, Hebden spent this stretch releasing music on his own Text label that was aimed squarely at the dance floor. Six of the eight pieces here first appeared that way, road-tested in clubs before being collected in 2012, while Lion and Peace for Earth were heard here for the first time.
Locked sets the tone with a patient, rolling groove and warm, smeared chords that seem to melt as they loop. 128 Harps is shorter and brighter, almost playful, while the eleven-minute Peace for Earth drifts somewhere more meditative, a gentle comedown after the late-night pulse around it. Pinnacles closes the album with a slow-building, hypnotic energy that never quite lets go.
What makes the record special is how human it feels. Even at their most functional, these tracks are full of small surprises, odd textures and moments of real tenderness. Spread across two LPs, the long tracks finally get the room they need, making this an ideal way into Hebden's dance-floor side and a gorgeous companion for late nights at home.
