Fleetwood Mac's Bare Trees arrives as part of the Rhino Reserve series, shining a light on the overlooked era between the band's blues beginnings and its later superstardom.

By 1972 the band was a five-piece in transition: Danny Kirwan, Bob Welch, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood, writing in a dreamy, autumnal style that sits somewhere between British folk-rock and West Coast soft rock. Kirwan dominates, writing half of the album, and his melancholy guitar lines give the record its misty, wistful character. It would be his last album with the group.

Welch's "Sentimental Lady" is the tender centrepiece, a lilting love song he would revisit years later. Christine McVie's "Spare Me a Little of Your Love" hints at the effortless pop songcraft that would soon make her a household name, and Kirwan's "Dust" sets a Rupert Brooke poem to haunting, bittersweet music.

The album ends with "Thoughts on a Grey Day," a poem written and recited by an elderly neighbour of the band, a moment that feels both strange and deeply moving.
