FireHouse's self-titled 1990 debut arrived just in time to catch the last great wave of melodic hard rock, and it returns here on smoke colored vinyl.
Formed in North Carolina, the band paired C.J. Snare's soaring vocals with Bill Leverty's nimble, tasteful guitar playing, backed by the rhythm section of Perry Richardson and Michael Foster. Landing on the brink of a new decade, the record proved there was still plenty of appetite for big hooks, stacked harmonies and guitar solos, and it made the band one of the last breakout acts of the hair-metal era before grunge rewrote the rules.
"Don't Treat Me Bad" is pure arena-rock adrenaline, all gang vocals and crunching riffs, while "All She Wrote" brings a moodier, bluesier swagger. "Overnight Sensation" kicks the energy up again with a knowing wink at rock-star dreams. And then there is "Love of a Lifetime", the heartfelt power ballad that became the band's signature and a slow-dance favorite for decades.
Listening now, the debut stands as one of the most polished and good-natured records of its era, free of cynicism and built on genuine musicianship. Snare's voice is a marvel, hitting notes that would leave most singers reaching for a lozenge.
This smoke pressing is a fitting way to celebrate a record that still knows how to party.
