Finn Wolfhard goes solo with Happy Birthday, a 2025 debut of scrappy, tape-saturated indie rock presented in a gatefold jacket.
Best known for acting in Stranger Things, the Canadian musician has been playing in bands for years, first with Calpurnia and then The Aubreys. In 2022 he challenged himself to write fifty songs in a single year, and this compact nine-track album draws from that burst of creativity. He produced it with Kai Slater, keeping the sound lo-fi, warm and fuzzy.
Lead single "Choose the Latter" is a jangly, sun-faded indie pop gem, while "Objection!" and "Trailers After Dark" lean into power-pop crunch and garage punk energy. The whole thing runs under half an hour, which suits songs this direct and unfussy. "Crown," the longest track, gives the record a slower, more expansive moment near the end.
Echoes of Elliott Smith, Ben Lee and Daniel Johnston are easy to spot, but the songs feel personal and unguarded rather than borrowed. Wolfhard sings with an easy, slightly ragged charm, and the band around him sounds like friends playing in a small room.
It's a confident, unpretentious start that shows his music deserves attention on its own terms. Anyone with a soft spot for 90s indie and modern bedroom rock will feel right at home here.
