Fela Kuti's He Miss Road is pure mid-seventies Afrobeat, three long, hypnotic grooves cut with Africa 70, and this pressing comes with a digital download card.

By 1975 Fela was releasing records at an astonishing rate, using each one as a fresh broadside against corruption, hypocrisy and the strutting powerful of Lagos. He Miss Road comes from the heart of that run, when his band was locked in tight and his voice as a bandleader and agitator was at full strength.

The title track sets the template, with interlocking guitars, chattering percussion and a horn section that jabs and swings while Fela takes his time arriving at the microphone. Pidgin English carries the message, and the title's phrase, roughly describing someone who has lost his way, gives him plenty to work with. Monday Morning in Lagos turns its attention to the city itself, before It's No Possible closes the album with another stretched-out workout that rewards patience and volume in equal measure.

Tony Allen's elastic drumming sits under everything, the tireless engine that made this music move.

For anyone building a Fela shelf, He Miss Road is a vital piece of his most fertile era, and a reminder of just how dangerous a groove could sound.
