Expensive Shit, the Fela Kuti album born from one of the most outrageous stories in music, is set for a 50th Anniversary Edition on gold vinyl.

In 1974, Lagos police raided Fela's home and claimed to have found cannabis. Fela swallowed the evidence, and the authorities held him in custody waiting for it to pass, determined to examine his excrement. By most accounts he outwitted them and eventually walked free. He turned the episode into this record, released the following year with Africa 70, laughing in the face of a system that badly wanted him silenced.

The title track is a scorching, side-long groove, Tony Allen's drumming locked into chattering guitars and punchy horns while Fela mocks his persecutors in pidgin English. It is protest music that refuses to stop dancing. On the other side, Water No Get Enemy shifts into something more reflective and majestic. Its proverb, that water has no enemy, builds into one of the most beloved grooves in his entire catalogue, carried by stately horns and a patient, rolling rhythm.
