Fatboy Slim widened his palette on Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, the 2000 follow-up to a global smash that trades some big beat bluster for soul, gospel and late-night groove.
Norman Cook had conquered dance floors everywhere with You've Come a Long Way, Baby, and rather than repeat the formula he loosened up. The title nods to Oscar Wilde's line about lying in the gutter while looking at the stars, and guests including Macy Gray, Bootsy Collins, Ashley Slater, Roland Clark and Roger Sanchez help shape a warmer, more varied and more soulful record.
"Weapon of Choice", with Bootsy Collins' rumbling vocal, became famous thanks to Christopher Walken's dancing in its video, while "Sunset (Bird of Prey)" builds a hypnotic, sun-bleached groove around a Jim Morrison vocal. Macy Gray brings smoky soul to "Demons", and "Star 69" is a relentless house stomper that still tears up dance floors.
The closing stretch leans into gospel-tinged uplift, ending on a note of hope rather than hedonism, and the whole album flows like a long night out that keeps finding a second wind.
Underrated on release and richer with every listen, it rewards a full front-to-back session on double vinyl, ideally with the volume turned up.
