Ronnie Radke spent five years releasing Popular Monster one single at a time, and this 2024 album finally gathers those genre-hopping hits into one ferocious statement.
After their 2017 album Coming Home underperformed, the Las Vegas band switched to a singles-first approach, and it worked. Released on Epitaph, Popular Monster is their first album in seven years and their final record to feature founding guitarist Derek Jones, who played on the title track before his death in 2020. Tyler Smyth and Radke himself led production, and guests include Tech N9ne, Jelly Roll, Slaughter to Prevail's Alex Terrible and former wrestler Saraya.
The range is dizzying. "Popular Monster" broods and explodes in equal measure, a confessional anthem that became the band's first platinum single. "Zombified" goes for the throat with a jackhammer riff and a sneer aimed at an oversensitive world, while "Watch the World Burn" whiplashes between rap verses, electronic flourishes and breakdowns heavy enough to rattle the shelves. "Voices in My Head" turns inner turmoil into a big, shout-along chorus.
Radke's own mugshot on the cover sets the tone for an album that refuses to apologize. Brash and wildly catchy, Popular Monster captures modern heavy music at its most chaotic, unpredictable and fun.
