Faces at full tilt, captured by BBC microphones between 1971 and 1973, fill this orange vinyl Record Store Day exclusive.
The lineup of Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones built its reputation on stage, where loose ends were part of the charm and the party never quite stopped. Their studio records had the songs, but radio sessions and concert tapes tell you what the fuss was really about. These performances catch the band in the stretch when Stewart's solo star was rising fast and the group still sounded like a gang of mates plugging in for fun.
The title track, Had Me a Real Good Time, kicks the doors open with Wood's guitar and McLagan's rollicking keys tumbling over each other. Robert Johnson's Love in Vain slows things to a smoky blues crawl, Maybe I'm Amazed turns Paul McCartney's ballad into a raw-throated shout, and Twistin' the Night Away gives Sam Cooke's dance-floor favourite a grin and a shove. Lane's bass and Jones's drums keep everything swinging on the right side of chaos.
Eight tracks, and not a dull moment among them.
For anyone who owns the studio albums and wondered how this band really sounded with the tape rolling, this is the answer, pressed in a suitably warm orange.
