Early Steps rewinds to 1969 and catches Faces in their very first moments as a band, before the hits and the hell-raising legend took over.
After Steve Marriott quit Small Faces, Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones joined forces with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood, and this collection documents those first tentative steps. One side features rough mixes from the new group's first recording session at Olympic Studios in Barnes that autumn, while the other draws on rehearsals taped on the band's own cassettes in The Rolling Stones' rehearsal space in Bermondsey over the summer.
What emerges is a band already brimming with swagger. Early takes of "Shake, Shudder, Shiver" and "Devotion" show songs that would land on their 1970 debut First Step taking shape in real time, loose and full of character. "Train" is a previously unheard Faces song, a genuine find for fans, and the rehearsal of "Pineapple and the Monkey" lets the instrumental side of the group stretch out.
Stewart's rasp and Wood's guitar already lock together like old friends, with McLagan's keys and Lane's bass giving everything that warm, ramshackle bounce.
For anyone who loves British rock at its rowdiest, this is a fascinating, unpolished look at how one of the great good-time bands found its feet.
