Slowhand returns in this 35th Anniversary Edition, a celebration of the 1977 album where Eric Clapton sounded most relaxed and most completely at home.

Named after the nickname he had carried since his Yardbirds days, Slowhand was recorded at Olympic Studios in London with producer Glyn Johns. Clapton and his road-tested band, including singer Marcy Levy and guitarist George Terry, cut the songs with an easy, lived-in looseness, and the album became one of the biggest sellers of his solo career.

It opens with Cocaine, his laid-back, menacing reading of the J.J. Cale song, all coiled riff and cool restraint. Wonderful Tonight, written for Pattie Boyd as she got ready for an evening out, became one of the most beloved ballads of the decade, while Lay Down Sally rolls along on a gentle country shuffle co-written with Levy and Terry. The Core stretches out for nearly nine minutes, Clapton and Levy trading vocals over a muscular groove that gives his guitar plenty of room to roam.

Warm and unhurried, it is Clapton playing for the pleasure of it, and you can hear the smile in every bend. This anniversary edition gives a much-loved record a fitting, well-earned place on the shelf next to his best work.
