Part scrapbook and part rock record, Unfinished Business collects the loose ends of Eric Carr's life in music, now pressed as a numbered, liquid-filled LP.
First released in 2011, two decades after the KISS drummer's death, it stitches together songs, instrumentals and short spoken clips of Carr greeting fans, recalling his audition and joking around at rehearsals. Former KISS manager Bill Aucoin also shares a few words about him. The effect is closer to an afternoon spent with Carr's own tape archive than a conventional album, and that intimacy is the point.
The music spans decades. "I Cry at Night" reaches back to 1967 and his teenage band The Cellarmen, while "Shandi" pairs Carr's 1980 vocal on the KISS ballad with a later update. "Just Can't Wait" brings in Danger Danger singer Ted Poley over music Carr cut with Bruce Kulick, and ZO2 tear into "All Hell's Breakin' Loose," the Lick It Up stomper Carr co-wrote with his bandmates. A handful of instrumentals reveal the restless writer behind the kit.
It is a loving, slightly ramshackle portrait, much like a well-worn box of cassettes discovered at the back of a closet.
For KISS collectors, the numbered, liquid-filled pressing turns it into a genuine showpiece for the shelf.
