Emmylou Harris's Spyboy captures one of the finest live bands of her career, presented here as a 2LP set on clear vinyl.

Released in 1998, the album followed Wrecking Ball, the atmospheric, Daniel Lanois-produced record that had reshaped her sound. To take those songs on the road, Harris assembled a lean, adventurous trio: Buddy Miller on electric guitar, Daryl Johnson on bass and Brady Blade on drums, with Miller co-producing the album alongside her. The band took its name from the scout who runs ahead of a New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian tribe, a nod to the rhythm and spirit they brought to the stage.

The set moves between eras with real ease. Where Will I Be and Deeper Well carry the moody, rolling pulse of the Wrecking Ball material, while Boulder to Birmingham, her aching tribute to Gram Parsons, sounds as raw as ever. Love Hurts and Wheels nod to her years singing alongside Parsons, and Prayer in Open D slows everything to a hush. The Maker stretches out into slow-burning, hypnotic territory.

Throughout, Miller's gritty guitar gives the songs a fresh, swampy edge.

For fans who love Harris's voice at its most fearless, Spyboy is a live record that catches a band at the peak of its powers.
