Eminem stages a showdown with his own alter ego on The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), his 2024 concept album, pressed as a double LP on red and blue vinyl.
His twelfth studio album is built around a battle between Marshall Mathers and the cartoonishly provocative Slim Shady persona that made him infamous, stitched together with skits and breaking-news interludes. The writing swings between deliberately outrageous, Shady-era humour and sober self-examination, with Dr. Dre among the producers and guest spots from JID, Skylar Grey, Big Sean, BabyTron and Jelly Roll.
Houdini resurrects the cheeky bounce of his early singles with a nod to the Steve Miller Band, while Guilty Conscience 2 revisits one of his classic concepts with a much darker twist. Tobey brings Big Sean and BabyTron into a high-speed lyrical relay, and the closing Somebody Save Me, featuring Jelly Roll, drops the act entirely for a raw reckoning with family and addiction.
It's provocative, technical and surprisingly vulnerable, often within the same verse. It's a fascinating chance to hear one of rap's sharpest pens wrestle with his own legend and decide which version of himself gets the last word, with plenty of callbacks to the early Shady records along the way.
