Elvis Presley's Christmas Peace splits the season down the middle across this 2LP set: two sides of yuletide swagger, then two sides of the gospel music he loved most.
First gathered in 2003, the collection draws heavily on the King's two holiday albums, cut in 1957 and 1971, alongside the sacred recordings he made from the late 1950s into the early 1970s. Hearing them side by side shows how naturally Elvis moved between sly rock and roll and deep devotion, and how seriously he took both.
The festive half opens with Blue Christmas, his slinkiest seasonal hit, all lonesome twang and those famous backing vocal swoops. Merry Christmas Baby, from the 1971 sessions, stretches into a loose, smoky blues jam with real grit, the band clearly enjoying itself.
Flip to the third and fourth sides and the mood changes completely. How Great Thou Art shows off the rich, commanding voice and gospel-quartet harmonies that shaped him long before fame arrived, while Crying in the Chapel brings a hushed, reverent glow. These performances carry a sincerity that his movie-era records rarely had room for.
It is a set for Christmas morning and quiet Sunday evenings alike, and a reminder that the voice behind the hip shake was rooted in the church pew.
