Angle is Elephant Gym's debut, the record that put Kaohsiung, Taiwan on the math rock map with a bass player leading the whole charge, now on pink and blue vinyl.

Siblings KT and Tell Chang, both classically trained from childhood, formed the band with drummer Chia-Chin Tu in 2012 after meeting at a high school music club, and the name itself explains the whole concept, elephant for KT's bass-driven melodies, gym for the agile, irregular rhythms underneath them. Rather than the guitar leading the way like most instrumental rock, this record puts bass at the absolute centre, jazz and post-rock and classical training all folded into music built on genuine technical intricacy that never once feels cold or academic. Recorded with Mino Takaaki of Japanese post-rock band toe, a mentor whose fingerprints on the genre are hard to overstate, the album arrived in 2014 as a genuinely assured debut.

Games showcases the interplay at its tightest, all three instruments locking into shifting time signatures without ever losing the melody underneath. Day Time brings in vocalist Enno Cheng for the record's warmest, most accessible moment, and Ordinary Route lets Tell's guitar work take the spotlight for once. Swan closes the album on its most patient, atmospheric note.

A debut this technically assured rarely arrives this melodically generous too. Elephant Gym managed both.
