Eels' Beautiful Freak is due a 30th Anniversary Edition on 2LP clear vinyl with blue and black, a fitting celebration for one of the great oddball debuts of the nineties.

Released in 1996, it was the first album Mark Oliver Everett made under the Eels name, and the first rock record issued by the newly launched DreamWorks label. E had released music before, but here, with drummer Butch and bassist Tommy Walter, he found the perfect frame for his wry, wounded songwriting. Jon Brion, Mark Goldenberg and Michael Simpson joined E in the production chair, and even the thought-bubble logo came from pop art legend Roy Lichtenstein.

Novocaine for the Soul is the calling card, a woozy, sample-laced plea for numbness that sounded like nothing else on alternative radio. Susan's House strolls through a bleak neighbourhood over a lazy beat built on a Gladys Knight & the Pips sample, while My Beloved Monster is a tender, scrappy love song with real bite. Your Lucky Day in Hell pairs a dark title with an irresistibly catchy groove.

The title track offers a gentle lullaby for every outsider listening.

Thirty years later, Beautiful Freak still sounds funny, sad and oddly comforting, and this anniversary pressing will be a lovely way to fall for it all over again.
