Editors put mandolin and acoustic guitar at the centre of Surface, Echo & Sound, the Birmingham band's eighth studio album, pressed on green vinyl.
After the club-ready electronics of EBM, made with Blanck Mass mastermind Benjamin John Power, the band went back to basics. Tom Smith brought in a batch of songs, the group shaped them together, and guitarist Justin Lockey recorded and produced the sessions himself in a small industrial estate in Gloucestershire over one productive summer. The result is a set of catchy guitar songs, warmer and more open than its predecessor.
Smith's mandolin sits at the heart of the sound, driving the rhythms as much as the drums do and adding a bright, organic glow that cuts through everything around it. The title track opens the album, "The Rush" imagines a bar-room conversation about life's highs and lows, and "Call It In" keeps the momentum up before "The Hills We Died Upon" brings things to a reflective close.
Running through it all is a theme of comfort found in friends, family and the people closest to you. It feels like Editors at their most human, two decades into their story, and the green pressing makes a fine home for it.
