Songs to Learn & Sing gathers the singles that made Echo & the Bunnymen the moodiest, most romantic band in Liverpool, pressed here as a limited edition on yellow vinyl.
First released in 1985, the compilation captured the band at the close of an extraordinary first chapter. Across four albums, Ian McCulloch, Will Sergeant, Les Pattinson and Pete de Freitas had turned post-punk tension into something grand and cinematic, full of swirling guitars, string-laden drama and McCulloch's brooding croon. This collection boils that era down to its essential moments, and it plays like a greatest-hits set from a band that never chased hits.
"Rescue" is all nervy energy, the sound of a young group discovering what it could do. "The Cutter" layers Eastern-tinged strings over a thunderous rhythm, while "The Killing Moon" remains one of the most haunting singles of the decade, a lush, fatalistic ballad that still raises the hairs on your neck. The set also introduced "Bring On the Dancing Horses", a shimmering new song recorded for the occasion.
For newcomers it is the perfect doorway into the band's catalog, and for longtime fans it is a beautifully sequenced reminder of how strange and sweeping British guitar music could be in the early 1980s.
