Earth, Wind & Fire's Spirit returns on 180-gram vinyl, reissuing the 1976 album that turned personal loss into some of the band's most luminous music.

Spirit was produced by Maurice White with longtime collaborator Charles Stepney, who died during the sessions. White completed the record largely on his own, and the title was chosen as a dedication to Stepney, whose orchestral imagination had helped shape the group's sound throughout their rise.

None of that grief weighs the music down. "Getaway" opens with a burst of horns and percussion, an exuberant escape plan that gave the band one of their biggest soul hits, while "Saturday Nite" struts on a tight, punchy groove built for the weekend. Verdine White's bass and the band's layered vocal harmonies keep everything moving with effortless lift.

The title track slows into a reflective, devotional mood, a fitting tribute at the centre of the record, and the instrumental "Earth, Wind & Fire" shows off the group's jazz chops, proof of how much musicianship sat beneath the hits. Even at its most polished, the album feels warm and human.

On heavyweight vinyl, it sits comfortably alongside That's the Way of the World and All 'n All as essential listening from the band's golden run.
